not sure if there was a preconceived desire to be on the campus or something to give your meeting credibility by attaching the O.C. name to the meeting?
Reflections has already established credibility. It was a very simple process that went something like this:
(1) We live in Oklahoma so best to find some place in Oklahoma to house the seminar. (2) Oklahoma Christian is nearby for us and centrally located in the state as well as Kansas and Texas. We had several coming from area states. (3) Oklahoma Christian has good facilities that they rent to organizations for these purposes.
Why would the reflections staff want to associate themselves with OC when they have been very critical of OC in the past? There are plenty of congregations that are centrally located and have nice facilities that you could have used for the seminar.
Why does OC sometimes send their representatives to speak at "conservative" congregations that they inwardly despise?
Why are some so curious as to the reason(s), if any exist, as to why the Reflections staff would want to be on the OC campus? Surely a school such as OC with many professors and intellectual Bible scholars would not feel threatened by a bunch of country preachers ?..?
Surely the school, which claims to be a resource and ally for the churches of Christ would want to be fair and balanced and allow a Lectureship on their campus by a group of ministers who speak frequently throughout the brotherhood.
Actually the theme of restoration is a topic that is currently being studied by many members. Therefore the timing of such an event is perfect!
The influence that several of these men are having throughout Oklahoma will continue whether or not OC allows them on their campus. But if they didn't it would surely cause their cry of "tolerance" to sound somewhat bogus.
Hasn't OC rented to various groups in the past (even denominational groups).....? If so, did those groups (Baptists affilliates) rent the hall to acheive "credibility" for themselves? I doubt it.
If I am not mistaken the churches down in the Lawton area rallied against OC a few years ago. A year or so later Mike O'Neal spoke at the Northwest church (a very conservative church) in Lawton, OK. Did OC speak at Northwest to acheive "credibility" with the more conservative element of the church?
OC's dilema...to have them on the campus, or not to have them, that is the question.
Since I know that OC is fair, balanced, and a resource to ALL in the churches of Christ they will allow this event to take place on their campus.
I would like to ask a question to someone who is a member of the coc. What is the position of the coc denomination concerning miracles. Do you guys believe in speaking in tongues?
asking about credibility and using OC's campus wasn't aimed as an attack. just curiosity really. i think someone has already alluded to the fact that many "conservative churches" have rallied against OC in the past, so i wasn't sure what the reasoning would be to have a gathering of "conservitive brethern" on a campus of school they don't seem to support.
the answer as to why is given already, and i appreciate the reflections staff taking the time to answer my incessant ramblings, but there remains a question i haven't asked that would like some clarification over...
what is the real reason of the reflections publication? and what is the real beef that some of the "conservative brethen" have with OC in the first place?
Anon: what is the real reason of the reflections publication?
Rick: Edification of the saints – Ephesians 4:15-16
Anon: and what is the real beef that some of the "conservative brethen" have with OC in the first place?
Rick: I cannot answer for all “conservative brethren”. I am not “the” voice but simply “a” voice. My personal “beef” with Oklahoma Christian as a university is that they continue to ignore the voice of “conservative brethren” about the direction many are taking in the Lord’s church towards denominationalism. They continue to invite them to speak on the university to influence “young skulls full of mush”. They allow professors to teach “liberalism” concerning the inspiration of Scripture without dismissal or rebuke.

1. What is this "direction" that you are talking about towards denominationalism?
2. Who is OC inviting to their school to teach. These supposed liberal teachers.
3. your arguement here about filling our kids heads with mush, must mean the teaching coming from these liberal teachers.
Do you read books other than the Bible? If so, are these authors outside of the coc? if there were good books besides coc author's, are their works not good because they aren't associatied with the coc? is it possible for someone to be more like jesus, have more fruit of the Spirit and be outside of the church of christ?
4. is your contention than, and that of the staff of the reflections publication, that the churches of christ are the only possessors of truth in the christian realm?
5. if i understand the restoration plea at all, it is that "we are christians only, not the only ones." so, why is that someone whose views that may differ from yours or mine, be such an issue that you would have to take a stand? also, wasn't the restoration movement plea also about letting the blood of Jesus erase the line of demarcations between christian sects?
6. is then the church once and for all restored back to its first century roots? is this even the goal we should have in the first place? what are doing to impact the communities we live in? what are doing to help bring the kingdom reign of christ into the world?
First, the church of Christ is not spoken of in the Bible in denominational terms. We are simply Christians; members of the church that Jesus said He would build without any denominational ties.
Second, the Bible teaches that miracles existed – so be believe in them. But the Bible also speaks of how those miracles arrived through the Holy Spirit directly upon the apostles and imputed through the laying on of their hands (Acts 2; 8). Without apostles to lay hands on anyone today there can be no miracles. Paul, the apostle also spoke of a time after the completion of the Word that miracles would cease (1 Cor. 13).
Third, if there are no miracles – and speaking in tongues is a miracle – then there can be no speaking in tongues.
3. your arguement here about filling our kids heads with mush, must mean the teaching coming from these liberal teachers.
Rick here: Please do not read too much into my statement. It is a modern proverb speaking of the young men and women who sit at the feet of their instructors and believe everything they say because they do not have any or very little life-experience or depth of study themselves.
Do you read books other than the Bible?
Rick here: YES
If so, are these authors outside of the coc?
Rick here: YES if there were good books besides coc author's, are their works not good because they aren't associatied with the coc? is it possible for someone to be more like jesus, have more fruit of the Spirit and be outside of the church of christ?
Rick here: how can one be more like Jesus if He has not put on the Lord in baptism and become a member of the church Jesus established with His blood? How can a person have more of the fruit of the Spirit without being Christ’s?
4. is your contention than, and that of the staff of the reflections publication, that the churches of christ are the only possessors of truth in the christian realm?
Rick here: The only possessor of truth is the Word of God. We all have the same Bible written by the same God and need to understand it the way it was intended by Him.
5. if i understand the restoration plea at all, it is that "we are christians only, not the only ones." so, why is that someone whose views that may differ from yours or mine, be such an issue that you would have to take a stand? also, wasn't the restoration movement plea also about letting the blood of Jesus erase the line of demarcations between christian sects?
Rick here: If I might be too to the point without being ugly, I would suggest you do not understand the restoration plea. The plea is simple and is found in 1 Peter 4:11 and exemplified in such grand Old Testament stories as Nehemiah & Ezra where the wall, the city and worship was restored.
6. is then the church once and for all restored back to its first century roots? is this even the goal we should have in the first place? what are doing to impact the communities we live in? what are doing to help bring the kingdom reign of christ into the world?
Rick here: Edification and evangelism are works of the Lord’s church. Let us not neglect one for the other. If a farmer has a gate down in the back forty he does not go around bragging on the fence. He fixes the gate (restoration).

Does Lynn consider himself in fellowship with brother Popejoy?
If I were Rick I would answer with the following..... (I am not Rick)
If Lynn would rebuke the false teachers and the false concepts being taught by Jeff Walling, Rubel Shelly and others when he speaks on a format with them and would actually make a stance he would not be asked back year after year, or the program would straighten out and get rid of the leaven (Walling, etc). Why doesn't the person asking Rick if he fellowships Lynn ask Lynn where he stands on doctrinal issues? I know brother Popejoy personaly and I can assure you he works hard at standing for the truth. If the college is to be respected as it once was with the majority of congregations in Oklahoma it will ONLY happen when and IF men like Lynn actually grow a backbone and let people know where they stand.
TEN QUESTIONS FOR LYNN 1. Do you believe that mechanical instruments of music in the worship to God today are sinful, because it lacks Bible authority?
2. Do you belive men like Jeff Walling are teachers who are opposed to the "apostles doctrine" of Acts 2:42?
3. Do you believe that Jesus Christ would be pleased with the direction of the school and the Chronicle has taken and continues to take ? (honestly)?
4. Do you believe that all denominationalism is opposed to the Bible and is sinful and all those who are inside of her walls will suffer punishment in an endless devil's hell?
5. Do you believe that congregations such as Farmers Branch that offer the Lord's Supper on Saturday night are wrong for doing so?
6. Do you believe that we shall answer to Christ per John 12:48 and 2 Cor 5:10 even if what we are doing is not seen or understood by some in the church?
7. Do you believe that the direct operation of the Holy Spirit upon the Christian today exists, seperate and apart from the word of God?
8. Do you believe that solos and choirs in the worship assembly of the church are authorized and pleasing to God?
9. Do you believe that it is permissible for women to wait on the Lord's table as long as they refrain from leading a public prayer aloud?
10. Do you believe that Bible silence is permissive or prohibitive? (Lynn has had over two years to answer this question).
"But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolator, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat." 1 Cor. 5:11
"A man that is an heretick after the first and second admonition reject" Titus 3:10
"Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them." Romans 16:17
"And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them." Ephesians 5:11

Rick here: The silence of the Bible on any subject is prohibitive because it is a covenant!
I'm Struggling with the Idea of the non-indwelling of the Holy Spirit/His work. I Know he works thru the word and that miracles do not exist today, but I don't understand providence nor have I found it in scripture can you help?
Providence is "the act of giving care or provisions beforehand; foreknowledge. Sometimes used for acts of God which are not miraculous, but in some senses miraculous acts are also providencial."
I can remember as a teen my family spent a lot of time at the lake. I can remember the great times we had fishing, skiing and camping out. What I did not realize for the longest time (when I became a parent) was how much work went on behind the scene. When my parents prepared beforehand for that weekend - that was providence. When parents of toddlers lay aside for their child’s college - that is providence.
To be honest – no man knows all the inner workings of God today. We may be able to say, because of His word, some things but no man knows the secret things of God (Deu. 29:29) and we must be satisfied with that lack of knowledge, lest it cause us to develop doctrines that are foreign to the New Testament.
May we all have a better appreciation of God's wonderful care for humanity, both in physical and spiritual providence.
In fact the idea of providence floods every book; every page; every paragraph; every passage; and every word in the Bible from Genesis 1:1 to Revelation 22:21.
I thank you for your comments about providence. I still have some issues about prayer. Do we pray just as a token of appreciation (Worship) to God or do we really expect that he will answer our prayers. When we pray for the sick, bless the food, or ask for forgiveness of sins what should we expect.
I think that I understand the struggle that you are speaking about and would suggest that just because one does not know every detail of how the process takes place – does not mean that you give up on the process. For example, I do not understand how an engine works yet I still go out to my car put the key in and turn it and put the thing in drive and take off. I do not understand the entire process but I know that the process works. You trust the one who gave you the instructions that He will carry out those things that are in accordance with both His character and will. Therefore I do believe that prayer is more than just a token of appreciation (1 Tim. 2:1).
The silence of the Bible on any subject is prohibitive because it is a covenant! =================== Could not silence be both permissive and prohibitive?
--Permissive in areas dealing with generic commands.
--Prohibitive in areas dealing with specific commands.
Mark 16:15 commands to go and preach the gospel.
The command to go is generic and so we are left to choose our own expedient.
The command to preach the gospel is specific. There is only one essential message of salvation. To monkey with it is anathema (Gal. 1:6-8).

How does one spell rescheduled?
When will it be rescheduled?
In a few days our committee will meet to discuss another date.

Because I do not find the denominational doctrine of the rapture in the Bible, I reject it.
This may be more study than can be accomplished upon this blog. If you would like I would be glad to start an e-mail discussion on the topic.

Could not silence be both permissive and prohibitive?
--Permissive in areas dealing with generic commands.
--Prohibitive in areas dealing with specific commands.
Mark 16:15 commands to go and preach the gospel.
The command to go is generic and so we are left to choose our own expedient.
The command to preach the gospel is specific. There is only one essential message of salvation. To monkey with it is anathema (Gal. 1:6-8).
j.dean,
Let's be careful not to mix expediency and Bible silence. They are two different discussions.
By the way this is one of the things that I hope to address at the lectures.

Rick,
I am interested in your take on the distinction between the two areas of expediency and silence.
