The art of peacemaking is an international concern and depends a great deal upon the type of hostility which exists. Studies in peacemaking are offered on the campus of every major university throughout the world. Hostility reduction is an entire field of study itself and one that every child of God should major in. Peacemakers, secular or spiritual; individual, national or international; base their work upon a self-evident principle: you cannot reduce hostilities without an understanding of the nature and background of the hostilities themselves.
Disagreements concerning the method of peacemaking generally depends upon the accepted standard. The Blackstone tradition of law, for example, argues that every law must have its underpinning upon an eternal foundation. According to Blackstone “they are to be found only in holy scriptures.” Again, “Men do not make laws, they do but discover them. Laws must be justified by something more than the will of the majority. They must rest on the eternal foundation of righteousness.” (Calvin Coolidge).
The following is a list of several types of hostilities that exist between man and his fellow man or between man and his God. Although there may be similarities in the process there are important differences which shall be noted in this article.
Alien Hostilities (Mark 16:15-16)
This hostility exists because of the nature of the two kingdoms; the kingdom of darkness and the kingdom of light (Col. 1:13; Phi. 3:20; Eph. 2:1—3, 18-19). In fact, Ephesians chapter two is an inspired thesis on divine peacemaking. Within the kingdom of darkness are individuals that are not citizens in the kingdom of God. They have not obeyed the gospel plan of salvation. The blood of Jesus has not washed away their sins (Rom. 3:23; Eph. 1:7). Therefore the wrath of God is upon them (Rom. 5:8-10). If one desires to be translated from the devil’s kingdom to the kingdom of God dear Son, he must be willing to submit to the blessed and only Potentate, Jesus Christ (1 Tim. 6:15). The will of Jesus must be preeminent (Col. 1:18).
Personal Hostilities (Mat. 18:15-17)
This hostility exists because one man has transgressed against another. The misapplication of this passage has made many a man skeptical about God’s pattern of peacemaking and going about to establish their own they have denied the beauty and majesty of God’s wonderful scheme of redeeming man to his former state with his fellowman. Even Eli of old understood the difference in an infraction between two men and one between a man and his God (cf. 1 Sam. 3:25).
Neglected Hostilities (Acts 6:1-8)
This hostility exists because of a carelessness or oversight of the Grecian widows in the church of Christ at Jerusalem. According to many Old Testament passages it is a serious breach of one’s compassion and his desire to be godly (Deu. 24:19-21; 26:12; Isa. 1:17; Mal. 3:5; Jas. 1:27).
Teaching Hostilities (Rom. 16:17-18)
This hostility exists because covetousness wherein teachers using feigned words would seek to make merchandise of the brethren (2 Pet. 2:1-3). Jesus is the first to describe the nature of the hostilities as deception; they are wolves who appear in sheep’s clothing (Mat. 7:15-20). Jude calls them “ungodly men turning the grace of God into lasciviousness and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ” (v. 4).
Moral Hostilities (1 Cor. 5:1-13)
This hostility exists because of immorality accepted, tolerated or prided within the number of the disciples. It is the redefining iniquity in order to take pleasure in those things that God hates (Pro. 6:16; Isa. 5:20).
Disorderly Hostilities (1 The. 5:14; 2 The. 3:6, 11, 14-15)
This hostility exists because unruly men (cf. Acts 17:5; 19:21-34). Some of the Thessalonians were guilty of walking disorderly because they did not live nor govern themselves according to the principles of Christ (cf. Phi. 3:16; Gal. 6:16). Matthew Henry correctly observes, “It is required of those who have received the gospel, and who profess a subjection to it, that they live according to the gospel. If they do not, they are to be counted disorderly persons.”
Subverted Hostilities (Tit. 3:10-11)
This hostility exists because men would rather draw disciples away to themselves rather than converting men to Christ (cf. Acts 20:28-31). They would use whatever means at their disposal (good or evil) to accomplish this twisted plan to become leaders among men.
Understanding therefore the nature of the hostility is essential in dealing with the enmity that arises because of each.

Wow. It takes a lot of gall for the most divisive person in the fellowship to print an article on peacemaking.
It always amazes me that when people introduce error they are the first to scream divisive when confronted.
Scripture requires of us to be sober and vigilant, to contend earnestly for the faith.
Agreeing to disagree in matters of faith and practice is ecumenical but it is not biblical unity.
True unity brings peace. Sin can be both moral or doctrinal. We have peace with God when we repent of sin and are forgiven by God.
Peace is not cheap. Reconciliation was only made possible through the cross.
Those who introduce error into the work or worship of the church are the truly divisive ones regardless of their smooth sounding words.
The Prince of Peace would say, "Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword" (Mat. 10:34).
Sean Connery as King Arthur said,
"There is a kind of peace that only comes on the other side of war!"
(fr. First Knight)
Ouch, I feel somewhat like Jeremiah when he wrote, "Woe is me, my mother, that thou hast borne me a man of strife and a man of contention to the whole earth! I have neither lent on usury, nor men have lent to me on usury; yet every one of them doth curse me" (Jer. 15:10).
I am curious, anonymous...
Would that be more divisive than Ken Jones, President of Lubbock Christian University in inviting Rubel Shelly and John Mark Hick (marked and noted false teachers) to speak at the 1st Annual Moser Ministry Conference?
Would that be more divisive than Rick Atchley in leading the "Nations largest Church of Christ" into error on Lord's Supper and Instrumental Music?
Would that be more divisive than the Tulsa International Soul Winning Workshop who spews forth venomous false teaching about fellowship with denominations?
My mother was right, "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen." Yet like Jeremiah, I have this burning deep inside that cannot be quenched. The work of an apologist is clear for me: "To positively proclaim the truth of the gospel and to negatively defend it regardless of whenever, wherever, or by whomever it is challenged."
rick
I praise God for men and women like Ken Jones, Rubel Shelly , John Mark Hicks, and Rick Atchley. These folks have heard was Paul stated throught the holy spirit in the scriptures. They have not substituted a commitment to non-instrumental worship for the cross or have elevated that tradition to a place equal to the cross of Christ. Prais God that these men worship the true and living God and not a set of man made rules.
Maybe they should have listened to Paul a little more closer:
"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him" (Col. 3:16-17).

Are you familiar with the fact that Paul taught the WHOLE counsel of God, that Paul is the one who wrote 2/3 of the NT epistles??
Paul did not ONLY talk about the cross. It was paramount for salvation, but the cross is not to be worshipped. God is to be worshipped. Obedience to the gospel plan of salvation moves one into a saved condition so that he might be a true worshipper. But he must then worship in spirit and truth.
It is not man made rules to require one to have authority for what he presents to God as worship. The principles of hermeneutics are derived from the scriptures themselves.
It is a false dichotomy to pit the cross against other elements of God's will.
The introduction of the instrument into NT worship is completely without NT authority (period). Its introduction is unnecessary to fulfill ANY command of God (period). Its introduction has always and still tends toward division. As such it is engulfed with much sin.
Oh, if only those who advocate its use would simply be honest. It has nothing to do with anything but selfishness. "I want it my way!!!" Forget the Scriptures, forget the evidence of history (church and music), forget the number of people who left denominationalism in the past, forget the brethren who paid for the buildings we use, or any brother or sister today.... we will do as we please.
1 Cor. 3 God will DESTROY those who devile (ie, bring division) his temple (ie, the church).

To answer your question, yes, you are more divisive. I've never heard any of those gentlemen say a negative word about you and your Southern Oklahoma cult even though they have every right to.

This does even discuss the 5 acts of worship. In fact this is what Christians are supposed to do in their everyday life to other Christians. Where is it authorized to do this in the assembly? The word worship is not even listed here in this scripture. How do we know God wants us to worship him by song at all? It says here only to sing to each other, not to God.
It always amazes how people can split hairs over the things their manmade tradition has taught them to split hairs over. But if you question them over something that is totally logical, they use every thelogical technical way to explain it away.
It says to sing with grace in your hearts TO THE LORD..... so I guess he does want us to sing to him. I hope that's not too technical.

The person who causes more *division* is the one who is more divisive, negative comments have nothing to do with it. A boss could cause unity in his subordinates by being hateful and giving them a common enemy, and preachers can cause division by fellowshiping denominations and accepting ideas contrary to the scriptures - why do you think Richland Hills and Quail Springs had so many lessons on instruments before adopting them? They even mention in their lessons that many of their members had serious concerns about the switch - some of the members agreed with it, some did not. If you think Rick is being hateful, that's a different subject.
Jeff
By the way, my squeamish friend, how did you judge the article itself?

Anonymous,
What is this "Southern Oklahoma cult" you refer to?
It can be bewildering. Someone steps up who loves the Lord, loves souls, and loves the truth. He speaks the truth in love and yet because it points out error and dares to speak of those espousing the error he is the one accused of being divisive.
And now the clearly unjustified labelling becomes even more pejorative... CULT. Come on!
There are two kinds of cults:
1. Sociological--typically this is when someone abdicates control of their lives to an individual or group, usually following a strong charismatic personality
2. Theological--typically this is when a group redefines the nature of the godhead (Father, Son, or Holy Spirit) in an unbiblical way.
The devotion some have to the likes of Shelley, Atchley, etc. could make them part of group 1.
Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses and such make up the latter.
There will never be peace as long as there are people who...
1. would prefer to have their own way regardless of a lack of authority.
2. would prefer to have their own way regardless of the division it introduces.
3. would prefer to have their own way with little regard for the principles of restoration.
Many are completely ignorant of how God works through covenants. We must appeal to the covenant currently in force for our authority in all matters of faith and practice.
We are in the Christian Age, under the Law of Christ. We must continue steadfastly in the Apostles' Doctrine.

rick here...
I am not sure if most members of the church regard covenant studies as important any more. It is vital for preachers to teach on this important subject matter; bulletins, pulpits, classrooms, etc., need to be full of this discussion and rid ourselves of the pop-psychology now being offered.
I would like to recommend the online version of Dungan' book on Hermeneutics.
Here is the page specifically about covenants:

D. R. Dungan
Hermeneutics: A Text-Book (1888)
CHAPTER V.
THE SEVERAL COVENANTS.
SEC. 37. THE NEED OF DISCRIMINATING BETWEEN THEM.
(1.) No one can understand his duty without knowing to what law he is amenable. God makes a covenant with Noah, and binds him to build an ark of certain dimensions and out of certain timber, and to put into it all kinds of beasts that could not pass the flood without such help. But I am not to learn my duty as a sinner, nor yet as a saint, by reading this covenant. It is not my duty to make an ark of any size. There are neither duties, threats, nor promises to me respecting anything of the kind.
So it is with all the covenants that God has ever made with man--each covenant is for the man or the men, to whom it was given, and for whom it was intended. It belongs to no other man, or men, except extended to them by its Author. In all the individual contracts that God made with the Patriarchs, the demands, duties and blessings were peculiarly the property of the men to whom the covenants belonged. Abel offered a sacrifice by faith (Heb. xi. 4); hence God had required the sacrifice; but it does not follow that I am to go to my flock and prepare an offering, and then come and burn it with fire. He has not required that of me, and therefore I would not be rendering him any service [106] by such a worship. So fathers were high priests, and the rulers of the tribes that grew up about them. They not only offered for themselves, but for their children and their children's children. To these men God gave many primary lessons, containing principles that should remain and have a place in the highest worship that would ever be given to the world. But there were also many things that were peculiar to the times and the people to whom these covenants belonged. Abraham was to go into the country of Moriah, and offer up his son, Isaac, on an altar; but the man who regards that as being direction given to him, is in a fair way to commit murder. That demand was made of Abraham alone. In like manner, the blessings that came to that man from such acts of obedience, were in consequence of the obedience which he rendered. But if any other man should have done that, it would have been a high crime.
Why choose to hold a lectureship on a campus which you believe is teaching error? Maybe we should be more concrened with reaching the lost in our communities instead of stirring up a hornets nest. This to me does not denote the actions of a peacemaker.
It never fails that someone enters the Reflections blog site and offers the evangelism criticism. Allow me to offer the basis of our work at Reflections in this manner: A worthy gospel preacher is one who positively proclaims the truth of the gospel and negatively defends it regardless of whenever, wherever or by whomever it is challenged.
We have stirred up the hearts of people towards God in 18 evangelistic campaigns over the last 16 months with just over 150 baptisms and about 40 restorations. We have preached the gospel of the kingdom from Wyoming to Virginia and from Michigan to Texas (cf. 2 Cor. 11:21). The Reflections team made up of members who sacrifice by taking off work, some shutting down their shops and thousands of dollars being given to evangelistic purposes. This congregation is to be commended not condemned.
As far as stirring up a hornets nest that is exactly what the gospel is intended to do with those who chose not to abide by it’s precepts (cf. Acts 17:1-6). Colt calls one of it pistols a “peacemaker” for a reason. My brother in law is a 20 year veteran of the OKC police force. He may have to arrest an abusive husband/father in order to keep peace in a family. My son is in the USAF and he defends this country and your rights by force at times. WWII ended and peace was secured by the Enola Gay.
Now, as to the question of “Why choose to hold the lectureship on a campus which you believe is teaching error?” This is the best question that we have received thus far, by far! So let me list a few reasons:
1. What better place could there be? Give me a better place in the OKC area?
2. We are not anti-OC; I actually have a daughter that attends the university.
3. The accommodations are beautiful.
4. It is centrally located.
5. There is hope, if we press the battle that OC will not go down the same path as ACU and Pepperdine.
rick
Are not the souls of the students, faculty, or staff on the campus of OC as precious as any?
Of what lasting good is saving the lost if we then do not keep the saved saved?
The process of making disciples is not just preaching the gospel and baptizing folks. It also includes teaching them to observe the apostles' doctrine.
went and bought myself a colt 45
called a pecemaker but I didn't know why
didn't know why didn't understand
moma said the pistol was the devil's right hand
steve earl
Whether you own it or the police office, a Colt 45 Peacemaker will come in handy if somebody decides to rape and brutalize your wife and family!
A gun is no more the devil's right hand than it is God's right hand. It is a tool that can be used either way, for good or for evil. You decide.
Anonymous is correct about the right hand - when used correctly Paul states that the government does not wield the sword in vain (Rom. 13:1-5). Yet that same government can turn on those who are doing well (i.e., preaching the gospel) and begin to kill them.
When government does what God intended for it to do, thus, complying with the will of God (equals the hand of God). When government fails to do what God intended for it to do, thus, not complying with the will of God (equals the hand of the devil).

if rick is a peacemaker adolf hitler was mother teresa

Peace with God is essential. But such peace can often make us enemies of other men.
Lost people are enemies of God (Romans 5). Can we expect them to be our friends.
James warns us that friendship (ie, peace) with the world makes us an enemy of God.
We can never be at peace with error if we love the truth. We can never be a peace with compromise if we truly love God with all our being.
Those who sow the division are the ones who despise peace.
Questions for rg
Was Elijah a peacemaker (1 Kgs. 18:17)? Isaiah (Isa. 6:8-13)?Jeremiah (Jer. 6:14-16)?
John the baptist (Mat. 3:7-12; 14:4)? Stephen (Acts 7)? Paul (Acts 17:2-4)?
Yes, I do consider myself to be a peacemaker in the sense that I seek to bring people who are lost to Christ through the gospel. The first thing a peacemaker must do is to recognize the hostility. One must understand the covenant in order to see any breach.
rick
It is truly puzzling how little people know or understand about covenants.
There are two kinds:
1. Where both parties are of equal standing and they negotiate the terms.
2. Where one party is clearly the superior. He sets the stipulations and the inferior party either accepts or rejects.
It is the latter that we have with God. We are not in a position to negotiate. We are not free to simply change things at will.
Our job is to recognize Him as Lord and do what He says.
In the church we have His provision and protection. But he demands our complete love and obedience.
God has made a number of covenants and each is binding on those under it as long as it is in force.
The Mosaic covenant was finished at the cross. Jesus instituted his own covenant. We are under it.
It is the final covenant God has promised to make. He has not added to it in any way for almost 2 millenia. There is no indication in it that he will or needs to.
It stands complete, once fall delivered unto the saints.
Anything found in the Psalms that is in agreement with the New Covenant is usable. But anything that is not inagreement would not be. This is true of the old priesthood and anything connected to that worship... sabbath, lambs, incense, temple, blood, even their form of music.
As far as your benefit to OC... doubtful considering your incoherent writing and your reference to drinking alcohol.
Statement made about "writting under the influence" will not be tolerated on this blog site.
Please remember this is a Christian blog site.
rick
rick took off my comment because it exposed him. i did not encourage or demand anybody drink alcohol i said i had been drinking..... i guess rick would delete genesis from the bible because his little eyes cant handle seeing ole noah as drunk as could be.
oc is benefiting by my writings.
x prof
still wont put the HG in the coc!!!!!!
holy ghost i didnt figure those words were allowed to be spelled out on this blog
x prof, your statements about Noah being drunk are baseless.
The contains indicates that his situation, unlike yours, was intirely accidental. It is very likely that fermentation was not possible until after the flood.
The preflood atmospheric pressure would have inhibited the process.
But then you will have to study that out for yourself.
Noah was not commended for that incident and is no justification for drinking esp. in light of all else the scriptures say.
x prof is welcome to repost his expose' of me, without the references to his drunken state, especially seeing that it is so powerful.
On the other hand, me thinks that the x prof thinks too much of his words.
rick
The NKJV uses the term "disorderly" 4 times. Three of these are in 2 Thessalonians 3.
The context is not about someone who is intentially bringing division into the body or teaching false doctrine.
It is about people who are not working to support themselves and getting into other peoples business.
One of the worst sermons I ever heard was an abuse of this text. The preacher (Garlin Elkins) read one of the verses which used the term disorderly. Then he went into this long litany of ways some brethren were doing with which he disagreed and called those things disorderly.
I don't think the guy knows how to do exegesis or an expository sermon.
That is a pretty strong statement based upon one sermon!
Brother Garland Elkins has probably done more good for the kingdom of God than most members, including many preachers have ever dreamed about. I do not doubt his humanity but if he used the verse in the manner you described he was correct.
Take a look at the context and consider when you do that (3:6) is a walk that steams from a belief system. “...walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us.” Remember that these things were after the traditions (i.e., apostolic doctrine of Acts 2:42 and 2 The. 2:15 “Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.”
rick
Sorry Rick,
But the context of 2 Thess. is talking about those who would not work. Paul used himself as an example of one who labored to provide for himself.
Tradition is not the same as doctrine. There is apostolic doctrine (what is taught). Then there is apostolic tradition (what is practiced or exemplified).
Paul told others to follow his example. This is the basis of the hermeneutic of direct statement and apostolic precedent.
Orthodoxy = correct doctrine
Orthopraxy = correct practice
Anonymous is correct that Orthodoxy = correct doctrine and Orthopraxy = correct practice but I will state once again in his words... Orthopraxy steams from Orthodoxy. Praxy simply cannot exist without Doxy. This is clearly stated by Paul in the verse I refered in the prior post and for this reason.
“Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle” (2 The. 2:15).
Paul says that tradition is taught by word and epistle.
rick
Rick is wrong on this one. I too agree that Garland Elkins quotes a lot of Bible but half the time he does not apply correctly. Rick, how can you jump on someone for only hearing one sermon of GE and making a complaint? You have done the same thing to others (even publicly). Patrick Mead ring a bell? How many sermons have you heard him preach?
Rick, Please tell us what university you graduated from?
I have never met Rick. But it is none of your business if or what school he has or has not graduated from. Until you have enough guts to sign your name I would keep my mouth shut about someone else.
For the record just like 2 John 9-11 has a immediate and remote context linked to it so it is with 2 Thes. Garland Elkins (whoever he is) is correct in his application. He is simply speaking to the broader principle linked to that passage. Any Chritian who does not walk in the light on a regular basis is in willful sin and is walking disorderly. He or she is to be disciplined by the pastors of the church if no repentance is made.
Oh yeah, I graduated from the University of Texas does that give me your approval?
Frank Scheiltz
"Rick, Please tell us what university you graduated from?"
Here it is in a nut shell brethren, you can only met with these men's approval if you can prove your so called credentials.
If you purchase any of the books that I have had a part in writing you can see my credentials.
rick
Credentials eh! Paul refers to appealing to such as foolishness.
But here we go...
Education:
1. AA from Christian College
2. BA from Chrisitan University
3. Some masters level work at another Christian University
4. Continuing Education from 3 different schools of preaching
Experience:
1. 3 decades of fulltime ministry (youth, education, preaching)
2. taught courses at 3 schools of preaching
3. taught courses at 1 Christian University
I have worked with congregations of single staff and multiple staff (preacher, education, youth, deaf, resident missionary, evangelism, full time elder, 2 secretaries, 2 custodians, day care, kindergarten)
Am I qualified? Hmm! Most of the original 12 were uneducated by academic standards. Maybe I am over qualified. Woe is me...can't win for losing.
Mark,
You should be ashamed of yourself. Such language and name calling. So juvenile.
He mentioned that listing credentials is an exercise in foolishness and apparently you have confirmed it
Has anyone heard the news?
There will be a Church of Christ/ICC uniy meeting at OC fairly soon!
So exciting! Lets pray for all the Christians of every denomination to come together for worship and unity.
READ JOHN 17
Hopeful for unity
I would like documentation on that please.
By the way I know of no denomination that teaches the truth on the gospel plan of salvation. That being true, how could one ever make a Christian. I concede the possibility of someone becoming a true disciple of Jesus INSPITE of, but not because of his denomination.
True unity begins at the point of salvation. If anyone teaches any other gospel... he will be accursed. There is only ONE..Lord, faith, baptism, body, etc...
Mark's comments have been erased by the blog administrator. Cursing will not be allowed on this blog sight.
Mark, in order for any of your comments to stay on this blog sight you must apologize to your fellow bloggers. I will not tolerate excuses. This is not a request.

Evidently Mark is refusing to apologize for his foul language and has threatened to break the rules of this blog whenever he pleases. He evidently sees no boundaries for himself. If Mark is the kind of loyal friends Oklahoma Christian has no wonder they are in a moral quagmire. Mark show yourself a gentleman and do the right thing.
rick
Rick it should be no surprise that when one loses his respect for the authority of scripture in matters of doctrine that he should lose the same respect for matters of propriety and morality.
Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.

1 Timothy 4:16, NIV
bro. disciple, you are correct.
We shall see if integrity is displayed?
rick
why do u congrat a man who uses niv
Anonymous,
Are you suggesting that lines of fellowship be drawn over the versions?
I generally use the NKJV along with the KJV and ASV. Occasionally I will use the ESV too.
But I chose the NIV for the reference because of how it worded it.
